Hi Everyone! I hope you are making it through the holidays safely, soundly, sanely & joyfully! It is a very cold start to the winter here in NH. I’m sitting in one of my MacCafe offices in Portsmouth and looking out on the beautiful marsh as cars pass by on Route 1!

A bit of news
Early this month I signed a contract with F.A. Davis Publishing and have begun work on a massive and deeply honorable book project writing the 10th Ed of Nursing Now! Massive b/c it is ~900 pages and honorable b/c I get to move groundbreaking work of Joseph Catalano, PhD and many many nurse contributors forward in this celebratory edition.
Stay tuned b/c we have some great ideas for bringing this work into the future of nursing and healthcare. It will keep me busy for the next 1-2 years!
Of course, I will still be championing Medical Improv for sure!
Upcoming Events
- Ellen Schnur, DTM, CP and I are back with another YES AND 101 on Jan 23rd from 1-2:30pm EST. It is free, online, & a certificate of attendence is included. Learn more and register here. (Next one probably May 29th)!
- If you are a nurse leader, save the date: Feb 23rd at 2pm EST. I’ll be doing an hour long live session for the Empowered Nurse Leaders’ Summit with Dr. Terry Carter, DNP, RN, NE-BC called, “Exploring Medical Improv as a Vital Leadership Strategy”. Terry and I had a wonderful shorter session last November and the response was so positive she invited me back. We explored mirroring and you can see what this looks like in this workshop my son Curran and I offered for the Center for Community Change and Dialogue in Bangalore, IN.
- Also, I’ve submitted article for Nursing2026 called, “Medical Improv as a Strategy for Creative Problem-Solving & Positive Change”. It is currently under Peer Review so I am crossing my fingers!
As you can tell, I am trying to reach nurses and other healthcare professionals at all levels b/c Medical Improv can be so transformative. Even in, especially in the chaotic environment so many of us are facing.
If you want to bring simple activities to your team or organization to help decrease stress, promote positive relationships, and/or build ‘soft’ skills, please check out The Medical Improv Toolkit: 3 Paths to Practice. Here’s some feedback from Anne Davenport, PT, DPT who has been exploring the Deeper Dive.
The first way that it is helpful is how well it is organized by topic with “bite-sized” engagements.
Skills learned in this course could support team dynamics – a champion on a Faculty team or healthcare team could bring concepts back. Whether it is a dysfunctional team, or a well-oiled machine.
Love the Quiet Currents and Hidden Moments! I particularly enjoy the meditations and how you provide the time to complete. Very useful with a busy schedule!
- One more thing I want to mention is that my friend and colleague, Mary Fridley at the East Side Institute is planning a cool event on Jan 31st 2026 from 12 – 1:30p EST. Developing Our Hearts: A Playful Conversation about Care, Caring, Creativity, & Community! Mary and the team at ESI do awesome and kindred work and I am hoping to attend! (There is a flexible fee too FYI).
